Sing 2 Cast & Character Guide: What Each Actor Looks Like

The Sing 2 cast followed up their hit 2016 film with another big stage show presentation as they kept fighting for respect. The animated sequel boasts a cast of bright and colorful characters, each with strong voice talent backing them up. From returning names to new additions like Eric André, the Sing 2 cast is remarkably strong. Best known for their Despicable Me franchise, Illumination is a profitable and popular animation studio. The first Sing film was a smash at the box office, grossing over $634 million worldwide on a budget of $75 million (via Box Office Mojo).

Many of the talented singers and actors in the Sing 2 cast also appeared in the first movie in the series. Sing 2 once again follows Buster Moon, the lovable koala, who goes on a big adventure in the entertainment capital of the world, Redshore City. Buster tries to put on the greatest show possible and, along with porcupine Ash, must convince reclusive has-been rock star Clay Calloway to participate. Sing 2 has all the fun in the original with a blend of familiar and new voices in the cast.

Matthew McConaughey As Buster Moon

A Koala Who Runs The New Moon Theater Troupe

Character: Oscar-winner Matthew McConaughey voices Buster Moon, in the cast of Sing 2, the koala who dreams of stardom and is willing to do whatever possible to get himself and his friends the big leagues. Buster’s determination and compassion are his strongest qualities, and it is he who makes the sacrifices needed to ensure that his troupe finally gets the respect they deserve.

Actor: Matthew McConaughey had his breakout role as Wooderson in Dazed and Confused. He found box-office success in rom-coms like How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days before moving to more prestige projects. McConaughey won an Oscar for her performance as Ron Woodroof in Dallas Buyers Club, then went on to play Cooper in Interstellar, Mark Hanna in The Wolf of Wall Street, and Mud in Mud. McConaughey also starred in the first season of True Detective.

Reese Witherspoon As Rosita

Rosita Gets Her First Chance To Be The Star

Character: While a definite lead character in the first film, Rosita receives a more complementary role in the cast of Sing 2. The character has a compelling arc, albeit in a smaller timeframe in the film, when she is cast as the lead of the show but must overcome her fear of heights to keep the role.

Actor: Reese Witherspoon voices the role of the talented singing pig. Witherspoon started in popular teen roles, as Annette in Cruel Intentions, Jennifer in Pleasantville, and Tracy Flick in Election. She became one of the biggest names in Hollywood with her lead role in the comedy Legally Blonde as Elle Woods and followed it up with her Oscar-winning turn as June Carter in Walk the Line. Witherspoon has also found a lot of success on the small screen, playing Madeline in Big Little Lies and Bradley Jackson in The Morning Show.

Scarlett Johansson As Ash

Ash Is A Rock And Roll Guitarist In The Play

Character: Scarlett Johansson voices a porcupine named Ash in Sing 2, a rocker who sings and plays guitar and looks up to her idol, Clay Calloway. Ash starts off doing solo gigs in nightclubs but comes back to Buster’s crew when he requests her help with their show. She plays a huge role as she eventually sets out to convince Clay Calloway to come out of self-exile and join their extravagant production.

Actor: Scarlett Johansson found her breakout role opposite Bill Murray in the Oscar-winning Lost in Translation in which she played Charlotte. She has received Oscar nominations for her roles as Nicole Barber in A Marriage Story and Rosie Betzler in Jojo Rabbit, both in the same year. She is best known for playing Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow in the MCU, debuting in the role in 2010’s Iron Man 2 and appearing in eight MCU projects leading to her solo movie Black Widow in 2021.

Bono As Clay Calloway

Clay Calloway Is A Retired Rock Legend

Character: Bono plays Clay Calloway, a lion who was once a famous rock star, but retired after the passing of his wife. He has been living a reclusive life, developing a tough exterior which makes convincing him to perform an even bigger task. The U2 lead singer gives the role a lot of soul, making Clay the emotional center of Sing 2‘s story.

Actor: Bono is not an actor by trade, but he took a rare step outside the music world by joining the cast of Sing 2. U2 has won 22 Grammy Awards and is part of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The fact that Clay and Ash sing U2’s “Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” in Sing 2 is just icing on the cake. In his limited acting roles, Bono has appeared in cameos on The Simpsons and Entourage, as well as a small role in the musical Across the Universe.

Taron Egerton As Johnny

Johnny Has To Shake Off His Nerves For Dancing

Character: Taron Egerton reprises his role as Johnny the gorilla in Sing 2. In the film, Johnny must learn how to dance for his climactic dance/fight scene but struggles with an overbearing instructor. He eventually enlists the help of a street cat named Nooshy and finally finds his groove in the show while also establishing a new romance with his self-confidence improving.

Actor: Egerton is best known for his role as Eggsy in the Kingsman film franchise. That breakout role helped him begin his career in Hollywood, which includes playing the titular hero in 2018’s Robin Hood, starring as Eddie Edwards in the true sports story Eddie the Eagle, and winning acclaim and nominations for his performance as Elton John in the biopic Rocketman. Egerton has recently returned to movies with his new hit Netflix thriller Carry-On.

Tori Kelly As Meena

Meena Has To Discover Herself In A Kissing Scene

Character: Tori Kelly once again voices Meena the elephant, one of the most heart-warming characters in the Sing movies. In the sequel, Meena is forced to do a love song with an arrogant performer (a yak played by Eric André) with whom she has no chemistry. However, when she falls for a fellow male elephant selling ice cream outside the theater, she finds the confidence in herself to finally perform her role in the show.

Actor: Tori Kelly originally made her name on the ninth season of American Idol, where she made it through to Hollywood. While eliminated at that point, Kelly went on to win Grammy Awards for her career in gospel music. She was also a contestant on the popular singing competition series The Masked Singer. In other acting roles, Kelly appeared as herself in the comedy Jerry & Marge Go Large.

Halsey As Porsha Crystal

Porsha Is A Spoiled Rich Girl Who Finds Herself

Character: Porsha Crystal is the daughter of the media owner who runs Crystal Entertainment, Jimmy Crystal. When she wanders onto the stage show, she wants a role and her father demands they give it to her. However, Porsha ends up a terrible actor and needs a lot of work to improve, which causes way too much conflict between Buster Moon and Mr. Crystal, adding even more pressure to the already seemingly disastrous show.

Actor: Halsey voices Porsha in Sing 2, which is solid casting because she is a singer and not an actor by trade. The musician has sold over one million albums in her career and also provided the voice of Wonder Woman in Teen Titans Go! To the Movies. She also had a cameo as herself in A Star is Born, played Mandy Starr in Americana, and appeared as Tabby Martin in the horror movie MaXXXine.

Nick Kroll As Gunter

Gunter Gets A Chance To Write The New Play

Character: Nick Kroll voices Gunter in the cast of Sing 2. The flamboyant dancing pig sets up a lot of what shows up on the stage but in a more complementary role. In this case, when Jimmy Crystal shoots down Buster’s original idea, Gunter says he has an idea, and it is his sci-fi stage show that ends up greenlit. He is one of the best comic relief characters in the movie, with a big personality he is not shy about sharing.

Actor: Kroll is mostly a comedian who is known for his work in animation, as he is one of the co-creators of Big Mouth on Netflix. He has also lent his voice to characters in The Secret Life of Pets 2, The Addams Family, and Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie. In the live-action world, Kroll had his own comedy series with Kroll Show, played Rodney Ruxin in The League, and recently appeared alongside Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans in the holiday action movie Red One.

Character: Bobby Cannavale is Jimmy Crystal in the cast of Sing 2. Crystal is a white wolf who is the media owner who runs Crystal Entertainment and gives Buster Moon a chance to put on his show in his theater. However, he is also the villain and threatens Moon’s life on several occasions. He’s a demanding presence and a worthy adversary of the cast of characters, who cares little about the artistry of the show and only wants to make a profit.

Actor: Bobby Cannavale is an Emmy-winning actor on shows like Will & Grace and Boardwalk Empire, while superhero movie fans know him for his role as Jim Paxton in the Ant-Man franchise. He has appeared alongside Robert De Niro and Al Pacino in Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman, opposite Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg in The Other Guys, and played the villain in the action-comedy Spy.

Letitia Wright As Noosh

Noosh Is A Street Dancer Who Helps Johnny

Character: Nooshy is a cat who helps Johnny learn how to dance for his scene in the show. She’s a rebellious but charming street cat who wants nothing to do with Johnny, but he eventually wins her over. Nooshy is one of the few characters in the cast of Sing 2 who doesn’t need to worry about singing, and she instead plays a strong match for Johnny in helping him finally come out of his shell and discover his true calling.

Actor: Letitia Wright became a breakout star in the MCU thanks to her scene-stealing role as Shuri in Black Panther. Following the tragic death of Chadwick Boseman, Wright’s Shuri took over the mantle of Black Panther in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Outside of the MCU, Wright played Nish in the Black Mirror episode, “Black Museum,” Altheia Jones in Small Axe, and Rosalie Otterbourne in Death on the Nile.

Pharrell Williams As Alfonso

Alfonso Is A Love Interest For Meena

Character: The cast of Sing 2 also includes one of the most successful singers in the music industry in a minor role that requires no singing whatsoever. In Sing 2, Pharrell voices an elephant named Alfonso whom Meena develops a crush on. He is not part of the show and only exists to serve Meena’s storyline as she builds up the courage to ask him out, thus coming out of her shell.

Actor: Pharrell Williams is a 13-time Grammy Award winner, and Illumination movie fans know his song “Happy” very well as one of the lead singles on the soundtrack for Despicable Me 2. Pharrell has also had a few smaller acting roles so far, with his role as The Narrator in The Grinch being his most significant one. He also voices himself in the Lego animated movie Piece by Piece, based on his life.

Eric André As Darius

Darius Is An Actor With A Huge Ego

Character: Eric André lends his voice to Darius, an egotistical yak with eyes for Meena, in Sing 2. He plays her love interest in the show, but she struggles to find any chemistry with his blow-hard attitude which he seems oblivious to. However, while he is one of the most villainous characters in the story, he is also one of the funniest with his bombastic attitude.

Actor: Eric André is best known for creating and starring in The Eric Andre Show, a surreal and avant-garde comedy series that challenges conventional talk show formats. The series is known for its unpredictable and often bizarre segments. André also notably starred in Bad Trip, a hidden-camera comedy film that showcases his talent for improvisation and fearless comedic style. He also provides voice acting performances for The Lion King, The Mitchells vs. the Machines, and Trolls Band Together.

Sing 2 is the sequel to the 2016 animated musical comedy film that stars several major actors and actresses as various animals.
