The end of Sonic 2 introduced the game’s concept of Super Sonic, which is Sonic powered by the Chaos Emeralds, something that could be further explored in the third film. Also, the film ended with Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles being together as a trio, with Sonic the Hedgehog 3 promising to feature an adventure with all three characters together from the start.

The mid-credits scene of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 introduced one of the more famous game characters: Shadow the Hedgehog. Shadow will be the main antagonist in the threequel, and his powers will prove to be too much for Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles to take on alone. Instead, the trio will need to turn to an unlikely ally as they recruit Dr. Robotnik to their cause of bringing down Shadow.
