Warning! Spoilers for Marvel’s Rise of Skywalker comic adaptation!
Out of all the iconic characters that make up the Star Wars universe, Lando Calrissian stands out. A smooth-talking con artist, Calrissian always has something up his sleeve, whether in the comics, movies, or shows. But Lando Calrissian was robbed of a touching moment that the comics are remedying.
The first issue of The Rise of Skywalker movie adaptation comic — written by Jody Houser with art by Will Sliney — was released on February 26. Though the comic is based on the film, it expands on certain beats and includes scenes that did not make it into the finished version of the movie, such as the relationship between Rose Tico and Leia Organa.
While a movie cannot cover every bit of conceived content, the comics provide the perfect place to give fans special moments that enhance the story, such as the one The Rise of Skywalker #1 does with Lando Calrissian.
The Rise of Skywalker #1 Allows Lando’s Emotions to Shine Through
He Is Given A Beat To Reflect On Rey’s Advice About Leia
Lando Calrissian has been a part of the original group of Star Wars heroes since his first appearance in Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back. He is the exact type of friend you’d would expect Han Solo to have — someone who proves to be very loyal when Han (and Leia) need it the most. In Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker, Rey encounters Calrissian and, before they part, he asks Rey to give Leia his love. Rey, wanting more from Leia’s old friend, advises Calrissian to tell Leia himself.
However, the film doesn’t allow Calrissian a moment to reflect on his deep and storied past with Leia or Rey’s advice. The Rise of Skywalker #1 remedies that, showing Calrissian’s internal contemplation after Rey departs. He reminiscences about how quiet and carefree his life has been as of late, but knows that it can’t last. His days of lying low and gambling pale in comparison to his loyalty to Leia. Calrissian admits to himself that, “I suppose you can only forget for so long.” This moment makes his return to fight the First Order — even at his age — all the more meaningful.
Calrissian Stands the Test of Time as a Legendary Star Wars Character
His Appearances In Various Star Wars Media Give Him Even More Depth
Lando Calrissian’s legacy extends beyond his smooth charm, style, and sweet-talking. He’s a symbol of redemption. Where he originally was a self-serving gambler and con man in The Empire Strikes Back, he becomes a vital Rebel Alliance hero by Return of the Jedi. His pivotal role in the Battle of Endor, piloting the Millennium Falcon to destroy the second Death Star, cemented his place as a key figure in the fight against the Empire. Lando Calrissian proves that even those with questionable pasts can rise to heroism, showcasing some of the most complex characterizations in the franchise.
