Suzie, Mixxy, and the titular home robot embark on a new adventure in Sunny episode 5, but the stakes for their mystery-solving endeavors only rise higher in the Apple TV+ show’s new installment. Created by Katie Robbins, Apple TV+ Sunny unfolds like a typical mystery drama, but what makes it unique is its portrayal of the near future and commentary on humanity’s fears towards AI development. Sunny’s cast is primarily led by Rashida Jones and annie the clumsy.
The show’s cutesy titular robot character is voiced by Joanna Sotomura. The Apple TV+ sci-fi show‘s drama, so far, has primarily revolved around the mystery behind Suzie’s husband’s and son’s sudden disappearance. 8 Masa Shows Up Drunk At His Son’s School
Masa’s Erratic Behavior Reflects His Professional Issues
The earlier episodes of Sunny highlight how Masa was always good to his family because Suzie was seemingly forcing herself to honor his memory. However, the more she thinks about his behavior months before he disappeared, the more she realizes that something was always wrong with him. Walking through one of these memories, Sunny episode 5’s opening moments show how Masa had shown up drunk at their son’s school after a stressful day at work.
Despite knowing it was an important day for their son, he tried to sabotage the occasion by behaving erratically. Fortunately for him, Suzie quickly reminded him that he did not have the right to ruin their son’s special day just because he was having a bad one. The flashback confirms that something was not right at Masa’s workplace, and he was gradually cracking under all the pressure he was dealing with.
7 Mixxy Takes Sunny & Suzie To Her Home
Things Initially Do Not Go As Planned
Toward Sunny episode 4’s ending, Suzie returns home to find someone had broken into her home when she was not around. This makes her feel unsafe in her home, especially after a brief but scarring encounter with Hime and the yakuza members she is associated with. Owing to this, in Sunny episode 5, she decides to leave her home, and Mixxy helps her. Mixxy takes both Sunny and Suzie to her village because it is cut off from the main city, preventing the yakuza from catching up with them.
However, the plan takes a complex turn when the three characters struggle to find public transport to Mixxy’s village. Mixxy convinces them that her village is not too far from the railway station. As a result, the three set out to walk to Mixxy’s home. This leads to a newer set of challenges when Mixxy struggles to recall the route to her home, and a man also keeps trailing them. While Suzie and Mixxy believe the man is a stranger, Sunny suspects he could be one of Hime’s men, sent there to find them.

6 Sunny Gets Suspicious About Mixxy’s Motives
Sunny Believes Mixxy May Not Have Their Best Interests In Mind
Tensions rise when the three make their way to Mixxy’s village. While Mixxy struggles to recall the directions to her home, and Suzie questions whether leaving her house was a mistake, Sunny begins to doubt Mixxy’s motives. Sunny suspects that Mixxy is trying to pit Suzie against her. During the episode’s initial moments, it seems like Sunny is only being paranoid because Mixxy seems completely harmless. She had only helped Suzie since the show’s early moments. However, towards the end of the episode, Sunny’s suspicion starts making a lot more sense.
5 Sunny Learns To Empathize With Suzie
Sunny Becomes A Little More Human In Episode 5
Since Sunny is seemingly an adaptive form of AI, she is still learning to be human. Owing to this, she struggles to truly understand Suzie’s grief towards her husband and son. However, in the show’s episode 5, Sunny gets offended when Mixxy looks down on her for not understanding Suzie and all the pain she feels because of her son’s absence. To understand Suzie, Sunny decides to mother an abandoned baby bird she finds during their journey to Mixxy’s home.
Although Sunny still seems to have a long way to go before she becomes human, she seems nearly as close to understanding human emotions as one can get without being human.
Although Suzie discourages her from carrying the bird with her, Sunny defies her and carries the baby bird in her warm battery slot. The bird eventually dies, leaving Sunny with important lessons in empathy and motherhood. Although Sunny still seems to have a long way to go before she becomes human, she seems nearly as close to understanding human emotions as one can get without being human. She is deeply affected by the bird’s death, helping her realize the weight of losing a loved one.
4 Suzie Recalls Something Was Wrong With Masa Before He Disappeared
Something Was Clearly Wrong At Masa’s Workplace
Towards the final moments of the episode, Suzie gradually starts recalling how Masa’s behavior was not right before he disappeared. While she always believed he worked on refrigerators, Masa always seemed a little too consumed by the anxieties and worries of his workplace. The episode also features a scene in which Masa shows up late to bed, and Suzie wishes to confront him by asking where he has been. However, she instead suppresses her anger and accepts that everything is fine when Masa assures her that he has resolved the issues at his workplace.
Even though Suzie struggles to connect all the dots, she starts believing that Masa’s disappearance was not an accident and likely had something to do with his work in robotics.
These memories of Masa help Suzie realize that he was hiding something from her. His behavior also reflected he was in some kind of trouble at his workplace. Even though Suzie struggles to connect all the dots, she starts believing that Masa’s disappearance was not an accident and likely had something to do with his work in robotics.
3 Noriko Calls A Mysterious Man
The Man Could Be Masa’s Father
Noriko, too, misses Masa throughout Sunny episode 5’s runtime. She tries seeking comfort by visiting an old friend, only to realize no one wants her around anymore. She even visits Suzie but is left disappointed when she learns her daughter-in-law is not home. To find some solace, she visits the room where Masa had shut himself during his hikikomori days. Interestingly, she then takes out her phone and calls a mysterious man.
Although the episode does not reveal who this man is, it seems likely she calls Masa’s biological father. In Sunny episode 4, Suzie and Sunny discovered that Shigeru was not Masa’s real father. His biological father was Hiromasa Matsumoto, who had also helped him during his hikikomori days. While the reason why Noriko calls him in episode 5 remains unknown, he might have yakuza connections and may even know what happened to Suzie’s husband and son.
2 Sunny Uncovers Some Repressed Memories
Sunny’s Memory Suggests She Might Know What Happened To Masa
Mixxy’s village conducts a funeral for Sunny’s baby bird. While the bird’s demise reminds Suzie of her son, Sunny’s newfound ability to feel empathy helps her unlock a repressed memory. In this memory, Masa seems to intentionally take her out of a bag to ensure she records an interaction between him and a mysterious man. After recovering this deleted memory, Sunny promises Suzie that she will try to restore all her lost memories, which could help them get closer to finding the truth about Masa’s disappearance.
1 Sunny Seemingly Gets Abducted By Hime & Her Men
Hime Seems To Have Realized That Sunny Holds The Answers She Seeks
In Sunny episode 5’s final moments, Suzie wakes up and discovers that Sunny is gone. When she looks around, she finds a prosthetic finger under her pillow with a strange note. Since the prosthetic finger belongs to Hime, it seems likely that she and her men finally figured out Suzie’s whereabouts and took Sunny with them. While the reason why they took Sunny remains unclear, many clues in the show’s previous episodes have suggested that Sunny herself might possess The Dark Manual.
The night before Sunny disappears, Mixxy watches Sunny and Suzie interact and seemingly gets jealous. Out of jealousy, she might have contacted Hime, allowing her to send her men to abduct Sunny. Sunny‘s next episode will likely delve deeper into Mixxy’s involvement in Sunny’s disappearance and Hime’s potential motives.
New Sunny episodes are released on Apple TV+ every Wednesday.
