"The Dirtiest Thing That's Ever Been Put On Television": Shrinking Stars Tease What's To Come In Season 3

Shrinking stars Jason Segel and Jessica Williams tease that the dirtiest joke ever said on television is coming up in the new season. Shrinking follows Segel’s Jimmy, a therapist who, after losing his wife, starts telling his patients his honest opinion. While this method is helpful for some, his irresponsible ways do have consequences. Williams plays another therapist at the same practice, who has a brief fling with Jimmy. Also included in the cast are Harrison Ford, Luke Tennie, Michael Urie, Lukita Maxwell, and Christa Miller. Shrinking season 3 is currently in production for Apple TV+.

In an interview with EW, Segel and Williams tease a wild joke in the new season. While Segel is one of the co-creators of the show, along with Bill Lawrence and Brett Goldstein, Williams is an established comedian. The pair share that while filming season 3, Williams added a “lewd” joke that Lawrence thought went further than anything the show has done up to this point. He then took it a step further to say that it “might be the dirtiest thing that’s ever been put on television!” Check out the exchange below:

Williams: The writers are amazing, and the more that we do the show, the more they write to us.

Segel: I will say, there are strokes that are undeniably Jessica. There were some last night when she was giving a speech where I’m like, you actually can’t write that because if you wrote it, maybe that’s the dirtiest thing you’ve ever heard, or how would someone even deliver that? But they’re all delivered with such elegance.

Williams: [Laughs] I was saying some pretty gross stuff last night that makes me feel really good. It was so gross. It was so lewd that Bill came out and said, “This might be the most lewd thing we’ve ever had on the show.” And-

Segel: [Laughs] He said it might be the dirtiest thing that’s ever been put on television!

Shrinking has never been a show that has been afraid to make some bold choices. The main character, Jimmy, is introduced to audiences by making incredibly destructive decisions that include drug use and hiring sex workers, all while ignoring his daughter’s grief at the loss of her mother. Despite his personal and professional struggles, Jimmy is a sympathetic character with a lot of humor. This is also helped by the stellar cast that surrounds Segel.

Williams’ Gaby is often a source of humor on the show, both giving advice to Jimmy and also calling him out when he needs it. What helps Shrinking succeed is that Gaby is not just the friend or love interest for Jimmy, but a fully fleshed-out character. This has only grown over the first two seasons, and the more Williams inhabits the role, the funnier the jokes become. With any show that lasts more than a season, there will always be an attempt to up the ante and do more than what happened before, and it sounds like Williams brings the show to a new level in season 3.

As seen in the Shrinking season 2 finale, the show can be emotionally devastating, uplifting, and hilarious. The season 3 cast is expanding with the likes of Michael J. Fox, Jeff Daniels, and Candice Bergen, only adding to the anticipation for the show to return. While the series has delivered plenty of memorable one-liners, Williams’ lewd joke is one to look out for when Shrinking makes its way back to streaming.
