Many Star Wars fans consider the moment Luke Skywalker refused to strike Darth Vader down in anger aboard the second Death Star as his official ascension to Jedi Knight status, but readers of Marvel’s new post-Return of the Jedi “sequel” comic have identified another instance that they believe qualifies even better for the hero’s official rite of passage to the level of Jedi.
Star Wars #2, written by Alex Segura, with art by Phil Noto, features a telling dialogue exchange between Luke and an alien character named Jesrit, as the still-fledgling Jedi promises to help her people, once he has recovered a vital Jedi artifact.
“It’s what we…the Jedi…do,” he explains, in a scene that stands out because it reminds fans that even if Luke became a Jedi at the Battle of Endor, this is the first instance in which he truly operates as a Jedi, doing what a Jedi would do, rather than following his own character arc.
