The Night Agent Season 2’s Biggest Possible Twist Would Make The Netflix Show A Lot Darker In Season 3

Season 1 of The Night Agent already proved the show is unafraid to kill off key characters, but one potential shocking twist in the upcoming The Night Agent season 2 could greatly change the show, making it darker as a result. Focusing on low-level FBI agent Peter Sutherland uncovering a massive conspiracy within the White House along with former tech CEO Rose Larkin, The Night Agent season 1 included plenty of shocking twists and massive betrayals. It’s unlikely that The Night Agent season 2 can bring the betrayals back, but major deaths could easily be part of the upcoming season.

The Night Agent season 1 had multiple surprising twists and never let audiences feel confident that their favorite characters would be safe, making a point to kill off a good chunk of characters close to Peter and Rose and who had become important to the story. This set the tone for The Night Agent season 1, making it succeed to the point that it quickly became one of Netflix’s most-watched series ever, but it also inevitably ups the stakes for The Night Agent seasons 2 and 3, considering how season 1 set the bar so high.

I Hope The Night Agent Season 2 Brings Back My Favorite Thing About Netflix’s Season 1

The second season of The Night Agent will be released later this year and I hope it will bring back one of my favorite things about season 1.

The Night Agent Season 2 Killing Off Rose Would Be Incredibly Dark

Rose’s Death Would Forever Change The Show & Heavily Impact Peter

Before the action started in The Night Agent season 1, Peter had already lost so much – his mother died and his father was accused of being a traitor before dying in mysterious circumstances. Rose similarly lost everything too, her company first and most importantly her aunt and uncle, in a violent way threatening to snuff her out more than once throughout season 1. While The Night Agent established itself as a political thriller not afraid to back how high the stakes are for those at its center with important deaths, killing off Rose in season 2 would be immensely dark.

Upping the stakes after season 1 by killing off
The Night Agent
season 1’s other protagonist would risk the very foundation of the show.

After everything they went through together and apart, Peter and Rose could really rely on one another. Even before they explored their romantic feelings, they trusted each other, making Rose’s potential death in The Night Agent season 2 entirely unsettling for Peter. The Night Agent season 2 might feel the need to up the stakes after season 1, but doing so by killing off The Night Agent season 1’s other protagonist would risk the very foundation of the show and what set it apart from others, that both Peter and Rose were instrumental in saving the day.

The Night Agent Season 3 Would Be A Whole Different Show Without Rose

Rose Not Being An Agent Made The Night Agent More Interesting

It’s unclear what the story at the center of The Night Agent season 2 will be yet. The Night Agent season 1’s ending set Peter up as a Night Agent, opening up countless possibilities for him, related to his mission and how he will approach it. However, even with Peter’s promotion changing the structure of Peter and Rose’s collaboration compared to what they achieved in The Night Agent season 1, taking Rose off the board completely would destroy the story’s careful balance, turning it into a political thriller with the hero motivated by yet another personal tragedy.

The Night Agent
season 2 is scheduled to be released in early 2025 on Netflix, but a release date is yet to be disclosed.

A clear pattern coming out of The Night Agent season 1 showed how many of those investigating, killing off targets or working as spies were couples. This was true for Rose’s uncle and aunt, for assassins Dale and Ellen, and obviously for Rose and Peter, who could not have uncovered the truth behind the major The Night Agent season 1 conspiracy if they hadn’t collaborated. The pattern saw the couples succeed or fail together. Were Peter to survive Rose’s possible death, it would change their pattern or The Night Agent season 3 would have to go against its couples premise.

Why The Night Agent Shouldn’t Kill Off Rose In Season 2

Rose Was A Main Character Just Like Peter In The Night Agent Season 1

Another peculiarity setting The Night Agent season 1 apart from Netflix’s many other political thrillers was how Rose and Peter repeatedly saved one another’s lives, being both fundamental for the resolution of the mystery in season 1. Season 2 killing off Rose would not only destroy Peter, but it would also turn the confirmed The Night Agent season 3 into something entirely different, more akin to the usual political thriller with a moral hero at the center trying to uncover the truth and punish the bad guys.

10 Reasons Why The Night Agent Was So Successful For Netflix

The Night Agent season 1 found massive success on Netflix with a relatively simple storyline and is now returning for a second season in 2024.

Rose and Peter consistently balanced each other out in The Night Agent season 1. It was Rose who made Peter see how he shouldn’t trust the FBI or the White House, and Peter who proved to Rose how she could still trust some other characters. Even in their less important bickering, like when Peter ordered Rose to take Elliot Rome’s supporters’ wallets and she thought they were robbing them, Peter and Rose were quintessentially themselves. Were The Night Agent season 2 to kill off Rose, it would force season 3 to lose the show’s most peculiar quality, potentially dooming it.
