Perhaps you are brand new or perhaps your skills are a bit dusty in the daily Connections puzzle. These puzzles can be challenging or they can be a little easier depending on how much the editor seeks to misdirect us each day. Today, there are some ways of misdirecting us, but that just means we will have to give you the best hints we can to keep you on your winning streak.
If you are not yet tired of puzzles, the NYT Vertex puzzle is a great one to add to your day. If you have ever wanted to do a paint-by-numbers without the mess, this puzzle lets you do it as you complete it. However, instead of simply grabbing the next color, you must also make the lines between each box yourself and figure out where they go before you get to color in anything.

Today’s Connections Category Hints
AUGUST 15 #430
To help you stir up the dust and clear the area to solve the puzzle, we have some starting hints for you that might jog enough of your memory that you can guess what the categories are and finish the puzzle.
- One category is about how far something can go
- One category is about togetherness
- One category is about nicknames for a beverage
- One category is about words that all come after the same word in phrases
If you still need a few more hints, we can get you going there too! Not everyone can see the same patterns and ideas in categories, and it’s better to learn than to give up, at least where Connections is concerned.

EXTENT |
RANGE |
REACH |
SCOPE |
This one feels like the easiest one of the day, as each of these references exactly what they say they do. Even when these words have other definitions, such as SCOPE, there is still a sense of scale there.
This makes it a little easier to put this one together without thinking too hard about it. Or, at least, I didn’t have to REACH for the answers for this category in the same way the RANGE might lengthen as the puzzle goes on.

COMPLEMENT |

MATE |
PARTNER |
The romantic in me likes to think these words are cute, especially when seen side-by-side like this. However, here is where the editor does not want to be cute and instead focuses more on misdirection. MATE, PAL, BUD, and PARTNER all feel like they could also be nicknames for a friend or close coworker. Instead, this is more focused on intimate relationships, which is alright, but it is a slight stumbling block if you get focused on the other potential category here.

As someone who doesn’t know that much about beer specifically, this was the stumbling block of today’s puzzle. I likely would have guessed BUD, having grown up around the city where it was manufactured, but the others I was much less familiar with as terms to refer to the drinks by.
This is slightly embarrassing, having spent a large amount of time in the beer capital of the US, but I suppose one cannot store everything they have ever heard in easily accessible brain-storage. If I had to lose something, I’d happily choose the nicknames for beer.

This can be quite tricky to get right if, like me, several factors make it harder to get the other categories right. Unfortunately, today was not a win for me, but thanks to my poor performance, you can fare much better and get all the words right.
There are always things to take away when we lose, but I think in this instance it was just an unfortunate three categories that I missed some of the details on. Hopefully tomorrow will be a new day and a new winning streak.
