If you do not yet consider yourself a Connections snob, then you might need to get a few hints and tricks in order to solve today’s puzzle. There are a lot of possibilities and a lot of ways the editors try to trick you, which can make each puzzle different and difficult in its own way. However, once you do start to play it more often, you will find yourself slowly getting to know the puzzle and can start seeing some of those patterns for yourself.
If you are looking for a similar puzzle with a different premise, you will want to try the NYT’s Wordle puzzle. It seems like it has the same strategies, but it is actually quite different, with a different number of possible mistakes, and you will need the opposite kind of logic in order to solve this one. Instead of separating and breaking things down, you will be trying to build a word up. However, the feeling you get while solving it feels the same, despite the differences.
Today’s Connections Category Hints
JANUARY 31 #600
The clues for this puzzle are a little different. Lately, many of the categories haven’t been connected by definition, but rather by being part of a general theme. However, today seems like it is a bit of a return to form, so you can have that hint for free. You can also have another four hints for free, which should help you figure out what the differences between the categories are:
- One category is about something that might hold a variety of things
- One category is about four words that all have to do with a certain facial feature
- One category is about a person who is sometimes feared, sometimes followed closely, and sometimes ignored
- One category is about four words that all start four different words – these new words are all part of the same sport

TRUNK |
This category I actually got fairly late into the puzzle, but not necessarily because it was difficult. I had been focused on the next two categories, and it was more due to that that I didn’t notice these. I did have TRUNK in the next category for a single guess, but it was also the first one I cut despite that it did mean something similar. However, this one is more of a very specific example, so changing it out for a new word made the most sense, despite that elephants do have one as a nose.

HONKER |
SNOOT |
SNOUT |
Speaking of noses, there are four good examples of words used to describe them. HONKER is my personal favorite, but also the one I ended up swapping with TRUNK because I missed it on my first sweep. I was actually fairly caught off guard, as it felt so natural, but when I looked around and saw HONKER I knew that one was much more likely. The reasoning is that this one does not have any other obvious meanings, whereas TRUNK does. Additionally, the other three options also felt more specific, leaving TRUNK to get the boot.

SNOB |
This is the second category I got, as right when the puzzle started I saw SNOUT and SNOB and immediately set out to solve it. I deduced that there was a nose-themed category and then returned to SNOB. I saw CRITIC and EXPERT, and then it took me probably 10 seconds to find CONNOISSEUR, which I found funny, because it was so long that the text was just hard to see. Maybe I’m just getting too old, but the small text on my phone made it so that I had to take a few seconds to actually look at it.

This last category I came too last, but very ironically I was already thinking about putting these words together. I was debating between these words and the storage containers, but for a very different reason than the category actually is. I honestly thought these words were all chicken-related when I first saw the combination of words. I didn’t guess them because I thought it might be a stretch and the storage containers were more likely. But it was funny when I saw that they did go together and that it had nothing to do with chicken.
