Figuring out what makes up the Connections‘ categories is like figuring out what makes up the perfect burrito. While you can try a little bit of everything, it’s better to pay attention to the details and get the flavor combination just right. Of course, It’s easier to do this when you have a few hints and tips to figure it out, just like you can always ask the chef what would go best in your burrito.
If you are looking for a puzzle that is less about figuring out the intricate details connecting words, you can try the NYT’s Mini-Crossword puzzle. This is because it is more about your trivia knowledge and how to apply it to a word puzzle than it is about recognizing how words relate to each other more existentially. It’s a great way to test your cultural knowledge and play around with words at the same time.

CLAY |
PAPYRUS |
PARCHMENT |
WAX |
As an archaeologist, this category made us smile a bit. There are many different ways ancient peoples recorded their own thoughts and feelings. CLAY was one of the first things people used, with WAX and PAPYRUS close behind. PARCHMENT came a bit later, but not so far behind that it does not deserve to be on this list. Now we will go back to digging for other ancient treasures.

ANCHOR |

MODERATE |
PRESENT |
PRESENT was a bit odd in this category, or so we thought. It’s likely only used to distract you as a possible match for GIFT, but usually you “present” something or give a “present” as opposed to a role. This is one where it is clear they were trying to trick you intentionally. ANCHOR and HOST are clear roles, whereas MODERATE has some of the same meaning-related issues as it is more of a verb than a role.

FACULTY |

INSTINCT |
TALENT |
This also was a bit tricky, as GIFT and PRESENT could easily fit here as well and FACULTY is a much less well-known meaning than that of a staff for educational purposes. However, we were able to figure this one out by doing some testing, although we were very close to running out of guesses. Especially since the last category had quite disconnected words, save for one detail that turned out to matter a lot.

BURRITO |
GIFT |
MUMMY |
SPRAIN |
If you had not gotten PRESENT already, it would very much fit in with all of these other wrapped-up things. SPRAIN and MUMMY are usually the first you might relate, as they both sport what most would interpret as bandages.
BURRITOs often have very similar colored wrappings, but GIFT having some many other potential connections for today made it difficult to pin down into any specific category.
