Gleaming amber in Connections Categories July 31

There are some interesting categories in today’s puzzle and some words that look like they should fit with each other that do not. Before we give out spoilers, here are a few hints to try to nudge you in the right direction:

  • There is no category for a specific type of animal
  • One category is about different versions of the same thing
  • One category is about variations of a drink
  • The last category is words connected by another word

If you still need a few pointers, check out the category names below. While there are not a lot of crossover words today, there are words that seem to make up a category that does not exist.

GRUFF

HOARSE

HUSKY

ROUGH

Realizing what this category was made me a bit sad, as it meant I would not get to construct a category of dog breeds. HUSKY, meaning the same thing as HOARSE and GRUFF, meant I did not get to think about cute puppies as much as I wanted to. It did not really stop me; I still thought about them every time I came across a dog-related word, but in the meantime, I was able to add ROUGH to this category and move on to the next one.

FINGERS

LITTLE

MIDDLE

POINTER

RING

This one did not immediately stand out to me, as while LITTLE and MIDDLE were both sizes, the other two did not immediately catch my attention. However, once I got to this category, there were fewer options, and when Ithought about RING and POINTER together, it suddenly clicked. There were, however, no dog-related words in this category, which helped solve the puzzle but was sad for me.

AMBER

PORTER

SOUR

STOUT

SOUR and STOUT felt like the big clues to me for this category as someone without much experience in the ale-world. However, the first two have enough cultural references for me to pick up on it. After that, it was a matter of connecting AMBER and PORTER, which were really the only words that made sense. I did have a think about whether any of these words referenced a dog-breed, but one did not immediately come to mind.

BULLDOG

FRY

HORN

KISS

I was not sure how these words were connected until I saw the final result once I clicked them all, but after seeing it I felt like I should have. And, in this case, even though it is not a dog-related category, a “French” BULLDOG is a real dog, making me happy. It is also apt, as the Olympics are taking place in France right now.
