If you are looking for an alternative solution to today’s Connections puzzle, you can get some hints from us that may help you see the puzzle in a new light. This one felt fairly challenging, as there were a lot of things that made me question my guesses as I went along. However, I was able to finish this one, which is nice. Due to that, I can help you avoid those challenges and get this puzzle done in no time at all.
If you are enjoying your time-solving puzzles today, you can keep that time going by playing the NYT’s Strands puzzle. It can be just as challenging as Connections or any of the other daily puzzles, but I find it more relaxing because you can get hints by playing and there’s not the pressure of only having a few guesses before you fail. It’s a fun twist on the word search that I enjoyed a lot as a kid, and you should try it out if it sounds interesting to you.
Today’s Connections Category Hints
MARCH 11 #639
The pieces and parts of this puzzle can be challenging depending on how you approach it. I was struggling with a few key aspects, but those got easier to deal with as time went along. I found one group of words harder to separate from each other in general. The words are all fairly simple when you first look at them, but as usual they have more depth than you assume at first glance. Check out the following four hints to get a little context on each category:
- One category is about doing something you normally wouldn’t
- One category is about things that can all make the same sound
- One category is about things that are all made of the same material – at least at one point in time
- One category is about four people who all had a talent in the same type of performing

VARIATION FROM THE NORM |

ALTERNATIVE |
BREAK |
CHANGE |
DEPARTURE |
This one took me a minute to get, as the group of words that tripped me up was the “pocket contents” that I thought included CHANGE, KEYS, WALLET, and PHONE. However, when that didn’t pay off, I was stuck trying to find something new, and it did take me a moment to start looking at the words here. I got BREAK and DEPARTURE first and then realized CHANGE must belong with them. At that point, it took me a longer time to find ALTERNATIVE, and I was worried it wouldn’t actually work but fortunately, it did.

ALARM |

INTERCOM |
PHONE |
I got this one second to last, but I think that was because of INTERCOM. I had to consider what was going on with this group of words, and INTERCOM to me doesn’t often make a ring noise. That might be my personal experience with an intercom system that didn’t do that, but it makes sense now that I think about it. I also was not sure what to do with KEYS, as I didn’t know what the last category was at that point so it was a good thing that I guessed this combination first.

FOOTBALL |
MOCCASINS |
SADDLE |
WALLET |
This was the second category I got, and it was because SADDLE and MOCCASINS stood out to me. They were unusual words and something that doesn’t easily go with other words. There are not many other meanings that could be swapped out for them, but there also weren’t any words that I would have put with them at first glance. However, they are both made with leather normally and, as I saw FOOTBALL, which is sometimes called a ‘pigskin’ in the U.S., things clicked into place for me and WALLET had to go here too.

KING |
LEGEND |
WONDER |
I had a good idea that KING, LEGEND, and WONDER went together, more because of what those words mean out of this context than anything. However, I didn’t see any other words that matched that definition at first, so it took a long time before I got the last word on this one. However, now that I see them all together with the category name, it does all make sense. I wasn’t thinking about last names with any of these words originally, but I need to think about whether a strange group of words could be names more often.
