Today’s Connections Category Hints
OCTOBER 2 #478
Sometimes, all it takes is one rogue word to make players feel less at ease, especially with Connections. Putting together the full picture of the puzzle can be quite hard, especially if there is one word you are not familiar with. In fact, there were several words I was not familiar with in this puzzle, which made it more difficult than it should have been. Here are the clues for today’s puzzle:
- One category is about playing the game
- One category is about how to use a specific utensil
- One category is about a common actor
- One category is about limbs
If you want to pull out all the stops, you will want to look at the other hints we have for you. Check out the below to ensure you are moving in the right direction.

BET |
CHANCE |
GAMBLE |
RISK |
This one could be easy or hard, depending on how you approach the question. If you focus too much on the CHANCE aspect, you will likely mention the RISK and how it is a GAMBLE to follow through on it. BET is a little more generic, but it gets the point across. CUBE and DICE are icons of these types of distractions sometimes. But is is an excellent way to get yourself out of the house, if nothing more.

JULIENNE |
SLICE |
This wasn’t easy, partially due to chance words in the previous category. JULIENNE stands out as a particularly odd word, and I decided to use it as a starting point for other types of words like her. One of them ended up being Julienne, which, as it turns out, is a way to cut up pieces of meat and not anything more sinister. This is a relief to someone whose mother would watch Dateline 24/7 all the time. And, in fact, all of these words have to do with how you use a knife in the kitchen.

JOKER |
TAXI DRIVER |
This category was a little harder to come up with, at least as a final answer. I know JOKER, HEAT, and TAXI DRIVER were all potential films, but I had to look to see if that was true. I have heard of most of them in passing, as opposed to knowing them very well. However, looking at the movies, I realized that while they didn’t share a common year or origin story, they all shared an actor, Robert De Niro.

OCTOPUS |
SHIVA |
SLOT MACHINE |
VENUS DE MILO |
The answers for this one kind of sound like a bar joke – four people walk into a bar, an armless statue, a god, a machine in a casino, and an animal in the ocean. I wasn’t sure what they all had to do with each other, particularly the SLOT MACHINE, but I remember even asking myself if it had to do with arms when I saw “Octopus” in the puzzle. That can certainly make things challenging if you have no idea what the stories were. Maybe one day, Venus can get her arms back.
