If you want to get a trifecta, or perhaps more appropriately, a quadfecta, in Connections today, you will want a few hints to get you to the finish line. Particularly in today’s puzzle, some confusing crossover words and multiple words could belong in the last category, which is often difficult anyway. This can cause a lot of confusion and frustration, particularly if you feel sure of a combination that is not working.
If you want to try something that is consistent but changing every day, you will want to check out some tips for The Password Game. While you will know what to expect for every rule every day, the answers for each rule are different, and you will have to constantly change your answer to ensure it fits all the rules. It can feel frustrating, but the ridiculous nonsense you will have at the end can make it well worth it.
Today’s Connections Category Hints
SEPTEMBER 25 #471
If you want some nudges without spoilers for today’s puzzle, we have a clue for each category that can help you separate the words and deduce the answers. This is a little tricky with today’s words, given what the categories are, but we have worked out some clues that can help you.
- One category is about sports.
- One category is about what you need for a specific job.
- One category is about four things, all named after their origination.
- One category is about four words that come before the same one.
Once you have checked out those clues and decided they weren’t enough, we will have some more hints for you in the form of the category names. Check them out below to get a fuller picture of the puzzle.

TRIPLE CROWN |
Today’s first and last categories involve sports, and one of the achievements mentioned in this category is gained by winning the KENTUCKY Derby, one of the words also in the last one. This can make things difficult and frustrating, but the key to this is that it is specifically about the achievement, not the individual events. HOME RUN is also a potential red herring for this one, so it is difficult to parse out what belongs where.

NEEDS FOR PAINTING A ROOM |

DROP CLOTH |
PAINT |
ROLLER |
TAPE |
This one is probably the easiest of all the categories today, as the words are generally the most unrelated to the others. However, ROLLER is a red herring if you are paying attention to the last category because a roller derby is, to me anyway, much more popular than some of the others. I was frustrated that it did not belong in the last category, but seeing PAINT, TAPE, and DROP Cloth made me resignedly realize that it belonged here.

FOOD NAMED AFTER CITIES |

---|---|---|---|
BROIL |
CHEESESTEAK |
SPROUTS |
WINGS |
This one could be hard, as none of the words that these things are actually named after are included in the words; you instead have to work that out on your own. Additionally, did you know there is a Philly CHEESESTEAK Derby? Apparently, all kinds of derbies are in this puzzle and outside of it. If you happen to be aware of it, that could be a potential pitfall, but the best guess is that these are all foods or directly related to food, and none of the other words in this puzzle are.

DEMOLITION |
HOME RUN |
KENTUCKY |
SOAP BOX |
This last one was tricky for all of the above potential words that could belong here. It caught my eye first, seeing KENTUCKY, ROLLER, and DEMOLITION and making the connection immediately. This also proved to be my downfall on today’s puzzle, as I could have eliminated some of the red herrings before reaching it if I had not gotten stuck on it. I did manage to eliminate ROLLER after a couple of wrong guesses when I started looking elsewhere, but I did lose on an unlucky guess when I found out the CHEESESTEAK could be a derby and got excited.
