Warning: Spoilers ahead for Twisters!
Summary
- There are no returning Twister characters in Twisters, but someone from the original film makes a brief appearance.
- April Warren appears in both Twister as Jo’s mom and Twisters as a rodeo attendee.
- Warren’s return for the sequel happened coincidentally.
As a standalone sequel, Twisters doesn’t feature any returning Twister characters, but the movie does include the return of an actor from the original film. Arriving nearly three decades after Jan de Bont’s 1996 beloved disaster movie, Twisters focuses on the next generation of storm chasers. Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell lead Twisters cast of new characters, who are all trying to use their expertise to gather unique research on tornadoes. Whereas Kate (Edgar-Jones) takes the more traditional scientific approach, Tyler (Powell) uses his charm and popularity as a “Tornado Wrangler” to essentially help those affected by severe storms.
By the end of Twisters, it’s no surprise that Kate and Tyler team up to attempt Kate’s tornado-taming experiment that killed much of her team years prior. Tyler’s team shares many similarities with Jo Harding’s old crew. In fact, both Kate and Tyler have experienced traumatizing events involving tornadoes, which has motivated them to better understand the weather phenomena. The same could be said about Jo from the original movie. Even though Helen Hunt doesn’t return for Twisters, someone connected to her character appears in the new movie.

Twisters’ Only Returning Actor From The Original Movie Explained
April Warren Had Uncredited Roles In Both Twister & Twisters
April Warren has become the only person to appear in both Twister and Twisters despite appearing in two separate roles. Warren first portrayed Jo’s mom in the flashback sequence at the beginning of the original Twister movie. Though she was essential to that opening flashback, Warren was uncredited for the role. 28 years later, Warren returned to the franchise playing an uncredited extra in Twisters‘ rodeo scene, where she sat next to Powell’s character in the stands before the tornado hit.

Twisters’ Returning Actor Cameo Being A Coincidence Makes It Even Better
After learning the actress who played Jo’s mom also appeared in Twisters, you would assume she had connections to the sequel that led her back. However, that’s not the case at all. According to April Warren (via KFOR News), the Oklahoma native sought out a part as an extra after discovering the new Twister movie was filming. Even better, the woman who played Jo’s mom shared her Twister experience with Powell while preparing for Twisters‘ rodeo scene. The revelation caused Powell to immediately alert director Lee Isaac Chung so he could meet Warren.
Warren also appeared in Chung’s previous Midwestern movie, Minari. Granted, appearing in Twisters after her memorable experience working on Twister was likely the highlight of her career thus far, especially since it all came together coincidentally. Warren noted that this time around, she was able to run among the chaos as a rodeo attendee instead of playing a character seeking shelter. She’s still unsure how much of her character can be seen in the final cut of Twisters, but being the only person to appear in both movies is still an awesome achievement.
