“Wait and See”: DC Writer Breaks Silence on Darkseid’s Connection to Absolute Superman

Given Darkseid’s connection to the Absolute Universe—which he created and infused with his energy upon his death in DC’s ALL IN Special—fans have been speculating about when, or if, the New God will appear in the various Absolute titles. Now, for the first time, DC writer Jason Aaron is breaking his silence and offering insight into Darkseid’s connection to Absolute Superman.

…Darkseid is ultimately the thread that connects the Absolute Universe and Earth-Prime.

Absolute Superman writer Jason Aaron recently sat down with ComicBook Club for an interview, where a valid question about Darkseid was raised. Noting that the Absolute Universe is infused with Darkseid’s energy, ComicBook Club asked whether there is a connection between this universe’s Kal-El and the New God.

Right away, Aaron answered that “there could be,” explaining that it would be odd if there weren’t, given that this Superman’s world was literally created by Darkseid and runs on his energy. He then elaborated further, offering some intriguing hints about what fans can expect when it comes to revelations about the true nature of this connection.

Interestingly, Aaron pointed out that none of the Absolute titles—Absolute Batman, Absolute Wonder Woman, and Absolute Superman—have used the word Darkseid yet. This in itself is intriguing, as it suggests the heroes of the Absolute Universe may be completely unaware of the New God’s presence and his connection to their world. This likely means one of two things: either Darkseid is operating from the shadows, or he is still recovering from his “death”—as it’s highly unlikely the New God is truly gone. However, despite Darkseid not yet being mentioned in these narratives, Aaron confirmed that he is “clearly a big key to the nature of this universe.”

Aaron further explained that Darkseid’s influence will continue to unfold across both the Absolute and Earth-Prime narratives, influencing both universes as their respective storylines progress. However, within the pages of Absolute Superman, any reference to Darkseid will ultimately serve Kal-El’s story—meaning the focus won’t shift away from Superman to explore Darkseid’s mythology. Still, Aaron teased that fans can start anticipating more New God connections. As for what those will be, he simply said, “[You’ll] just have to wait and see.”

Jason Aaron: I think it would be weird if there was absolutely no connection whatsoever, right? Again, if you’ve read the All In Special, you know that Darkseid connection. If you’ve just been reading any of the Absolute books at this point, we’ve never used the word “Darkseid” in any of those books. You don’t need to know that part of it to understand what’s going on in any of these comics. Everything you need is on the pages of those books. But the Darkseid part of is clearly a big key to the nature of this universe. That’s the thing we will see continue to develop in the pages of these books, that’s clearly a story that affects both universes, and we’ll continue to see that story build.

While we still don’t know if Darkseid will make an in-person appearance in the Absolute narratives anytime soon, we do know that he is ultimately the thread that connects the Absolute Universe and Earth-Prime. As the Superman: Lex Luthor Special revealed, Mr. Terrific is investigating Darkseid’s ‘death’—an investigation that led him to discover the existence of the Absolute Universe, which he and Luthor are now working to establish communication with. Hence, as the heroes of Earth-Prime continue to follow the trail Darkseid left behind, the New God will ultimately be the reason these two worlds collide.
