I don’t think there’s a more talented ensemble of millennial actors than in the Scott Pilgrim movie and TV show, but the creatives not featured on-screen deserve a ton of credit, including the late Doug Sherwood. First published in 2004 by Bryan Lee O’Malley, the Scott Pilgrim graphic novels centered on the titular lovesick Torontonian bassist have become a cornerstone of pop culture. The 2010 film adaptation, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, became a cult classic, spawning a video game and an animated Netflix TV series.
The best part of Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is that the voice cast is comprised entirely of the actors in the live-action movie reprising their roles. For eight fantastic episodes, we watched Ramona Flowers investigate the disappearance of Scott Pilgrim, and it all came to a head in the season finale, where we learn that the villain behind it all is none other than the future Scott Pilgrim himself. The finale left the door open for a potential Scott Pilgrim Takes Off season 2, which has yet to be confirmed. However, the ending is also noteworthy for its tribute card to Doug Sherwood.

As the camera pans away from Scott, Ramona, and their friends in the Scott Pilgrim Takes Off season finale, a parting shot of the Toronto skyline is replaced by a tribute card reading, “To Our Friend Doug Sherwood“. For Scott Pilgrim fans, Doug Sherwood is definitely a name you should know, as he was a production assistant who worked on the final two volumes of Byran O’Malley’s graphic novel series, Scott Pilgrim v.s. The Universe and Scott Pilgrim’s Finest Hour. Sherwood’s obituary also says that he was “influential in the production of the Scott Pilgrim movie.“
Douglas “Doug” Sherwood was born on September 3, 1984, and passed away on January 23, 2023 at the age of 39. The cause of death was likely due to complications from severe hemophilia B, which Sherwood was diagnosed with at just five months old. His obituary goes on to detail a happy life full of family, friends, art, and joy.

Doug Sherwood was a freshman at Portland State University, studying art, when a bad fall on ice resulted in a severe injury, forcing him to drop out of school. Shortly after this unfortunate circumstance, Sherwood began working as an intern at the independent comic publisher, Oni Press, where he found his true calling. Thriving at the publishing house, Oni Press offered Sherwood a fulltime position, and he worked as an editorial assistant and an award-winning letterer.
