Why All Of Us Are Dead Season 2 Is Taking So Long

It has been almost three years since All of Us Are Dead premiered on Netflix, but season 2 has yet to receive an official release date. The horror K-drama tells the story of a zombie outbreak that begins at a school in the fictional city of Hyosan after a professor develops a virus that turns rage into strength. All of Us Are Dead is one of the best K-dramas on Netflix and has found worldwide success, yet the wait for the second season has been frustrating.

Big-budget streaming shows taking long to return isn’t new. From Stranger Things to House of the Dragon, viewers have learned to wait a couple of years for new seasons of some of the most popular shows across all platforms and networks. However, over two years after the show was renewed, All of Us Are Dead season 2 still doesn’t have a release date.

All Of Us Are Dead Season 2 Was Announced In June 2022

The First Season Was A Hit For Netflix

All of Us Are Dead season 1 dropped on Netflix on January 28, 2022, with 12 episodes. Netflix had already found a lot of success with original K-dramas, especially 2020’s Sweet Home and 2021’s Squid Game. All of Us Are Dead continued that trend by reportedly bringing 474.26 million viewing hours in the first 30 days according to Nielsen (via What’s On Netflix) and appearing in the Netflix Top 10 of multiple countries. While season 1 fully covered the webtoon All of Us Are Dead is based on, it ended on a cliffhanger.

All of Us Are Dead is based on a webtoon called Now At Our School.

All of Us Are Dead changed the end of the webtoon, allowing the story to continue past the destruction of the school. This was a clear sign that the show was going to continue if successful. On June 6, 2022, All of Us Are Dead 2 was officially announced by Netflix. Two announcement videos were released, one of which included the show’s lead actors. Interestingly, Cheong-san’s actor Yoon Chan-young was part of the announcement, which indicated that his character was not really dead and was going to return in the second season.

Per The Chosun Daily, Film Monster CEO Park Chul-soo announced on April 2024 that All of Us Are Dead season 2 was going to start filming in that same year and that the show was going to return in the latter half of 2025. This means that All of Us Are Dead 2 was originally planned to come out three and a half years after the first season, which itself was already a significantly large window but not so different from other Netflix webseries. For comparison, both Sweet Home and Squid Game took three years to return after their debuts.

According to Star News, All of Us Are Dead season 2’s production has been pushed back to 2025. This means that All of Us Are Dead 2 has reportedly not started filming yet and won’t start until next year. In other words, the original 2025 release window seems all but impossible now. With the show filming in 2025, All of Us Are Dead season 2 might only premiere in 2026. This would make it a four-year window between the first and second seasons of the zombie K-drama, which is surprising even for a big-budget show.

Per Star News, the reason why All of Us Are Dead season 2 has moved production to 2025 is to ensure a better final product. It must be noted that Sweet Home and Squid Game produced the second and third seasons back to back, which is why their respective third chapters took way less than their second ones. Sweet Home 3 premiered less than a year after season 2, whereas Squid Game 3 is confirmed for 2025 after the show’s return on December 26, 2024. It’s unclear if All of Us Are Dead will do something similar.

How All Of Us Are Dead Season 2’s Delay Can Impact The Story

The Characters Were In High School During Season 1

With All of Us Are Dead season 2 only filming in 2025, the Netflix K-drama might need to include a time skip to account for the characters’ ages. While it is more than usual for actors to play characters who are younger than them – especially in high school and college settings – All of Us Are Dead’s season 2 delay may just be too much. All of the main characters are supposed to be high schoolers during the events of the show, yet more than three years will have passed in the real world.

With a lot of time to spare before All of Us Are Dead season 2, there are many K-dramas to watch while waiting for the show’s big return.

Sweet Home, which also took a while to return, included a one-year time jump at the beginning of season 2 to explain why the characters, especially the children from the first season, now looked much older. All of Us Are Dead will also have the difficult mission of recapturing momentum after so many years gone by. Although the show has dedicated fans who cannot for season 2, the general public will need to be reminded of what the show’s story is and who its characters are.

Netflix seems to have no concern about viewer’s feelings regarding delays between seasons. All Of Us Are Dead taking so long to get from one season to the next has become commonplace for the streaming giant. Fans of Stranger Things, especially, can empathize with the frustration. Fans are used to shows having new seasons yearly until the end. Netflix doesn’t have that policy. The first season of Stranger Things arrived in 2016, and it took nine years to get to the final fifth season. A big reason is that the shows are a lot bigger than those on network television.

Why Shows Like Stranger Things & House Of The Dragon Take So Long Between Seasons Explained By 2 Experts

Two experts break down why popular TV shows like Netflix’s Stranger Things and HBO’s House of the Dragon have such massive breaks between seasons.

However, it will be three years since season four ended of Stranger Things before season five finally arrives to end the show. This is not always a good thing, as a Reddit thread had fans discussing the gap, and Glexxington wrote, “Hate to say it but I’ve lost most interest in the show from the huge gaps in between. I’ll definitely watch, but my excitement is as low As it gets.” TheMagicalMatt agreed, writing, “I haven’t lost interest, but I’m definitely ready for it to be over… It’s been 8 years. Lemme get some resolution.

Other shows this has affected include Alice in Borderland, Squid Game, and Wednesday. Unlike Stranger Things, which released its first two seasons in 2016 and 2017, these three shows had their first seasons and then went a long time before following up with a second. Alice in Borderland had two years between its first two seasons and three before its third arrives in 2025. Squid Game had three years between the first and second seasons. It has been three years since Wednesday came out and there still is no season 2.
