Why Moiraine & Lanfear Want Rand To Go To Tear In The Wheel Of Time Season 3

Moiraine and Lanfear don’t agree on much, but they both wanted Rand’s next step in The Wheel of Time to be a visit to the Stone of Tear. Josha Stradowski plays Rand al’Thor in The Wheel of Time’s cast, and though the fantasy TV series examines a grand ensemble of characters, he holds a specific prominence to the story. Rand al’Thor was raised as a shepherd’s son in a small village called the Two Rivers, but his destiny is to fulfill the prophecy of the Dragon Reborn.

One of the central ideas explored in Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time novels is how the world reacts to a prophetic savior, or, in the case of the Dragon Reborn, someone who has the potential for horrible destruction. The Red Ajah, for example, want to eliminate Rand, while others might consider him their leader. Moiraine and Lanfear are two characters with specific expectations of Rand, not because of his nature but because of his destiny.

The Dragon Reborn Prophecy Explains Why The Stone Of Tear Is So Important

Rand Must Go To Tear To Retrieve Callandor

The prophecy, also known as the Karaethon Cycle, features numerous Aes Sedai Foretellings that project the actions of Dragon Reborn. With that in mind, Moiraine and Lanfear wish for Rand to visit a location known as the Stone of Tear because the prophecy deems that he will. The Stone of Tear is a massive fortress built by the Aes Sedai and the One Power, and at its core is one of the most critical pieces of Rand’s upcoming journey: the sa’angreal sword, Callandor.

The Stone of Tear will never fall, till Callandor is wielded by the Dragon’s hand.

The Stone of Tear will never fall, till the People of the Dragon come.

To fulfill the prophecy, Rand al’Thor must journey to Tear to retrieve Callandor, and this adventure is a huge part of the novel The Dragon Reborn. In the book, he actually defeats Ishamael at Tear, which he did at Falme in the TV series. That’s because The Wheel of Time’s season 3 story skipped The Dragon Reborn and went straight to The Shadow Rising, with Rand deciding to travel to the Aiel Waste before Tear in the adaptation. At some point in the show, he’ll have to make a stop there.

Rand and Lanfear Selene in Wheel of Time season 2

Lanfear is a complicated character in The Wheel of Time. On the one hand, she’s one of the Forsaken, which means she can never fully be trusted. However, her interests are her own, and they can often coincide with Rand’s, though she would push him toward a different fate than Moiraine. Just like in the book, Lanfear encourages Rand to fulfill his destiny and become a legend, but she doesn’t do it so that he can save the world; she wants Rand to rule the world with her at his side.
