Will Trent Update Confirms New Character Won’t Return For The Rest Of Season 3

A Will Trent update reveals that one of the show’s new characters, Marion Alba, is not expected to return for the remainder of season 3. The character, portrayed by Gina Rodriguez, only joined the show this season, but she became one of the most prominent characters in the recent run of episodes. Will Trent season 3 will run until the end of April, and the series has already been renewed for season 4.

Per TVLine, co-showrunner Liz Heldens shared that Marion is not expected to appear for the remainder of Will Trent season 3. She explained that the season had the highest episode count of the show to date, and this meant the opportunity to flesh out stories, but also that not every character could have a complete arc. However, she also revealed that she would not rule out a return for Marion in season 4. Check out Heldens’ full comments below:

Marion is not going to resurface before season’s end. It’s funny… when we started [Season 3], we were like, ‘Oh, 18 episodes is the biggest order we’ve ever done!’ And then when we got to the end, we were like, ‘We don’t have enough runway for everybody.’ I think that Gina Rodriguez is wonderful. She pops off the screen. We love her. It was an amazing experience to work with her, and I wouldn’t rule out her coming back in Season 4 at all.

What This Means For Will Trent Season 3

It’s Tough To See Where Marion Fits In

Will Trent has many complex story strands and a wealth of interesting and compelling characters. However, there are limited episodes, and not enough time to cover every character. As Marion joined the Will Trent season 3 cast as a newcomer to the series, there are more pressing matters for the show to cover right now, especially as the finale nears. Marion will not be a part of that following the couple’s breakup in episode 12, which ensures the series will be focusing its attention elsewhere.

Will Trent Season 3 Is Only Setting Will & Angie For More Heartbreak (By Trying To Get Them Back Together)

Will Trent season 3 is seemingly trying to push Will and Angie back together, which is the worst possible thing the ABC series could do.

While it’s too early to determine whether Marion is Will’s romantic endgame, the duo had a relationship that was fairly popular (if somewhat divisive) among viewers, and it was good to see Will happy for the first time in a while. However, since their breakup, Will is back to burying himself in work and closing himself off emotionally, which means it might be a while before he’s ready to be vulnerable with Marion again, if ever. While the character will not appear again in season 3, Heldens’ comments are certainly cause for optimism that she’ll be back in the future.

Our Take On Marion’s Will Trent Future

There’s A Strong Chance The Character Returns

Gina Rodriguez as Marion in Will Trent season 3, episode 6

Marion has been a great addition to Will’s personal life over the course of the season, as she has helped to bring him out of his shell. The character may not show up again in season 3, but with Will Trent season 4 on the way, there is a strong chance Marion could be back. Much will depend on Rodriguez’s availability, as well as developing the right story for the character, but the likelihood is high that she returns.

Seeing her romantically involved with the main character didn’t need to be the defining aspect of her arc, yet it seems her role has petered out following their breakup.

Season 3 has four episodes left, meaning there will be a decently long stretch where Will doesn’t interact with Marion, and she doesn’t show up. Recently, it’s seemed as if the main character’s romance with Angie (Erika Christensen) could be sparking once again. This is despite the end of Will Trent season 2 seeing him put her in custody, jeopardizing her career in the process. But, with them working together and having a prior romantic connection, it seems like nothing is off the table.

However, it’s still somewhat disappointing that Marion won’t be showing up for the rest of the season, as it makes her character arc feel unfulfilled in some regards. Seeing her romantically involved with the main character didn’t need to be the defining aspect of her arc, yet it seems her role has petered out following their breakup. This makes it somewhat disappointing that she won’t be involved in any more of Will Trent‘s GBI cases, even if her busy job as an Assistant District Attorney offers an additional excuse for her absence.

What Will Trent’s Romantic Future Holds

He Might Not Be Alone For Long

Despite Marion’s absence, it seems like Will isn’t going to be single for very long. Season 3, episode 13 saw him realize his feelings for Angie overpowered anything else he felt, even kissing her not long after this self-reflection. While the pair aren’t together again yet, Will and Angie’s relationship has been a mainstay of the show since it began. This makes it more plausible the duo will find a way back to one another, especially now that Marion is no longer showing up for the rest of season 3.

Although it’s unfortunate that Marion and Will’s relationship isn’t going to develop further, the fact Rodriguez has grown into a major part of the series means her character could still come back. It would be disappointing if Will Trent season 4 didn’t see her return, or at least be given a proper sendoff that has less to do with her romantic relationship. Even so, season 3 won’t see her in the forefront, unlikely to be setting the stage for her potential return.

New episodes of Will Trent air Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
