Yellowstone: 6666 – Story & Everything We Know About The Spinoff

Yellowsone: 6666 is upcoming spinoff of Taylor Sheridan’s hit Western drama Yellowstone on Paramount+. As the main series comes to a close in 2024, series creator Taylor Sheridan is fleshing out his contemporary Western universe through multiple shows. While 1923 and 1883, the first Yellowstone prequels, fleshes out the very roots of the Dutton ranching empire in Montana, Yellowstone: 6666 will reveal more about the well-known 6666 or Four Sixes Ranch in Texas.

Yellowstone ranch hand Jimmy Hurdstrom (Jefferson White) was sent by John Dutton to the Four Sixes ranch to learn some essential cowboy skills. As Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) explains, the Four Sixes is practically “where cowboying was invented.” Jimmy returns to the Dutton ranch in Yellowstone season 4, episode 10, “Grass on the Streets and Weeds on the Rooftops” as a new man. Yellowstone: 6666 is bound to reveal much more about what goes on at the notorious but highly respected Texas ranch, and will take the franchise out of Montana for the first time.

An Uncertain Update On The Spinoff’s Development

After months and months of almost no news regarding the spinoff, the latest news comes in the form of an uncertain update regarding Yellowstone: 6666. The news came directly from executive producer Christina Voros who oversaw the flagship series. Unfortunately, despite her important position within the greater Yellowstone universe, Voros has little to offer regarding 6666.I honestly don’t know how Taylor chooses to tell which stories he chooses to tell when,” said Voros, which all but confirms work isn’t actively happening on 6666 or the previously announced 1944.

it may be that 6666 has been cast aside in favor of a more direct continuation of Yellowstone.

With the spinoff centering on Beth and Rip already confirmed, it may be that 6666 has been cast aside in favor of a more direct continuation of Yellowstone. However, Voros’ comments do leave the door open for further expansion in the future, and it’s clear that no one, besides Sheridan himself, actually knows what’s going on in the Yellowstone universe.

Read Voros’ comments here:

I honestly don’t know how Taylor chooses to tell which stories he chooses to tell when. I think he has closed a lot of doors on Yellowstone this season. There are obviously characters that we will not see again because they have been dispatched. But I think he has left some doors open, and there’s some doors that I can’t tell if they’re locked or not yet. But we will know when we cross through them.

Yellowstone season 5 part 2 concluded on December 15, 2024.

The upcoming spinoff, Yellowstone: 6666, has been confirmed, and the show was announced back in February 2021 (via Entertainment Weekly). When the show was first announced, nothing was known about the cast, crew, or even many story details, and it has remained that way in the years since. There’s been little movement since 2021, and the current status of 6666 is up in the air. Various other Taylor Sheridan projects (Landman, Tulsa King, etc) have taken precedent, and it’s clear that 6666 might not be a high priority as the celebrated TV producer moves forward.

Producer Christina Voros all but confirmed that 6666 was on hold in December 2024 when she mentioned that she knew nothing about its development. While this doesn’t mean the project is off the table forever, the announcement of the direct Beth and Rip spinoff suggests that 6666 could be canned. However, Taylor Sheridan has been quite tight-lipped about his Yellowstone plans so anything is possible.

Yellowstone: 6666 Story Details

Many Details Remain Unclear

There have been no specific plot details released yet about the Yellowstone: 6666 spinoff. However, Paramount+ did release a few specifics in a February 2021 press release, writing:

“Founded when Comanches still ruled West Texas, no ranch in America is more steeped in the history of the West than the 6666. Still operating as it did two centuries before, and encompassing an entire county, the 6666 is where the rule of law and the laws of nature merge in a place where the most dangerous thing one does is the next thing.”

If the new Yellowstone spinoff is set in the 1800s, it could potentially feature some of the characters from 1883, many of whom were military veterans and cowboys who could conceivably be involved with the Four Sixes Ranch. Whether Yellowstone: 6666 is set in the present or the past, it’s bound to continue Sheridan’s unique vision of the American West, and expand the franchise.

The History Of The Real Four Sixes Ranch

The Ranch Began Over 100 Years Ago

The Four Sixes Ranch was founded in 1900, and was established by Texas cattleman Samuel Burk Burnett, who allegedly won the ranch in a card game using a hand of four sixes. In reality, the name comes from the first 100 head of cattle that Samuel Burk Burnett purchased in 1870, all of which had the “6666” brand. After the dust from the Civil War had settled, opportunities abounded for those with the means to grab them, and Samuel Burk Burnett took those opportunities to develop a ranch that had built a reputation for superior workhorses, racehorses, and Angus cattle.

Burnett’s great-great-granddaughter Anne Burnett Marion died on February 2020, which led to the Four Sixes Ranch being listed on the market for $347.7 million. In May 2021, Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan purchased the ranch, likely in preparation for Yellowstone: 6666. Whether it’s in the past, present, or future, Yellowstone: 6666 could be even better than either the original Yellowstone or any of its other spinoffs.
