The 300 prequel show gets a new update from filmmaker Zack Snyder, who comments on its development status. Released in 2007, 300 marked Snyder’s follow-up to his 2004 breakout hit, Dawn of the Dead. The film, which stars Gerard Butler as King Leonidas, chronicles the ancient battle of Thermopylae in which 300 Spartans fought the larger army of Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro). Following 300: Rise of an Empire (2014), it was reported earlier this year that the world of the first film is set to return in the form of a prequel TV show hailing from Snyder.
In a recent interview with ComicBook.com, Snyder confirms that he is indeed working on a 300 prequel series. Unfortunately, it sounds as if the project is still very early in the development process, with the filmmaker revealing that they’re still in “preliminary meetings” in which story ideas are being batted around. Read Snyder’s comment below in which he compares the prequel to his new anime project, Twilight of the Gods (2024):
“We’re just getting ready to dive in and get to work on it. It’s super fun, I love the world. And even just in the preliminary meetings we’ve had talking about, like, ‘What if this happened or that happened,’ just a lot of it’s just really fun to like go, wow, it’s a rich standard. It’s similar to this [Twilight of the Gods] in a weird way. As far as there’s a lot of underpinnings.”
What Snyder’s Update Means For The 300 Show’s Release Timeline
When Audiences Expect Snyder’s Prequel
Snyder’s update essentially confirms that the show is still very much in the brainstorming phase of development, with the director and his collaborators having not yet nailed down the story they want to tell. This also means that the 300 show has not yet been given any kind of official green light. The initial Variety report that announced the development of the prequel revealed that the show was in the works at Warner Bros. Television, and Snyder’s update confirms that WB hasn’t yet committed to actually making the series.

The ending of Zack Snyder’s 300 hides some important themes and messages behind the film’s impressive action and some creative storytelling devices.
As for when the 300 prequel could release, assuming it gets a green light, 2027 or beyond seems like a likely bet at the moment. Snyder teased his next project earlier this summer, revealing that it’s a “small movie” without any major VFX, but there have been few updates on this project, and it may well not pick up steam until 2025. It’s also unclear whether Snyder will be devoting any time to expanding his Rebel Moon universe at Netflix following the poor reception to both of those movies.
Our Take On The 300 Prequel Series
Will The Show Be The Win That Snyder Needs?
Snyder is a divisive filmmaker and his filmography is filled with peaks and valleys, but 300 is generally regarded as one of his stronger works. The film works as a standalone story, however, and it’s not clear how much a prequel will be able to add to or enhance it. The reception to director Noam Murro’s 300: Rise of an Empire was also generally quite negative, which could have soured some audiences on that particular world.
After reviews for his Rebel Moon saga were mixed to negative from critics and audiences alike and his Army of the Dead sequel was reportedly scrapped, Snyder is arguably in need of a comeback project. It’s possible that his upcoming “small movie” will be such a project, but if it’s not, that certainly puts a lot of pressure on the 300 prequel show.
