Lazarus is a new, exciting project by Shinichiro Watanabe, the genius behind Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Space Dandy, and Carole & Tuesday. The anime is a sci-fi action series set in a near-future world where medicine has transformed thanks to Hapuna, a miraculous drug developed by the mysterious Dr. Skinner. However, it’s revealed one day that Hapuna causes death to anyone who has taken it after three years, and as the third year approaches its anniversary since initial administration, it falls to the Lazarus special task force to locate Dr. Skinner and compel him to create a vaccine before humanity faces obliteration.

Besides the Watanabe name that is attached to the series, the anime will be a collaboration between the prolific anime creator and Chad Stahelski, the director of the John Wick series, who will serve as the action director. Furthermore, studio Mappa will animate Lazarus, and fans should know their track record with hits like Yuri on Ice, Jujutsu Kaisen, Vinland Saga, and more. Together with the other core members of the staff, like Miho Sigiura (art director), Akemi Hayashi (character designer), and more, this is the dream team, and this adaptation’s production is filled with amazing talent who will surely make the anime as amazing as possible.

The released trailer and promotional videos are just as exciting. Not only are the visuals gorgeous and action sequences very fluid, but the two soundtracks by Floating Points and Kamasi Washington, the people in charge of the series’ music, sound amazing. From a production standpoint, Lazarus does not look like it will disappoint at all. There are definitely some very high-quality anime that will be released this year, but fans should not count out Lazarus, as the sheer backing it has makes it a contender for one of the animated series of 2025.
