Wrestling legend Hulk Hogan reveals why his planned movie biopic starring Chris Hemsworth has been scrapped by Netflix. Hogan rose to prominence as part of the WCW and WWF (rebranded to WWE) wrestling franchises in the 80s and 90s, and won multiple wrestling championships. In the early 1990s, Hogan left WWF to pursue an acting career, before being coaxed back to the ring with WCW. A popular yet controversial figure, it seemed only a matter of time before a biopic on the star would be commissioned. Netflix was developing a Hogan biopic, with Chris Hemsworth set to star as the wrestling icon.
However, in an interview with PDB podcast, Hogan revealed that the project was scrapped due to issues with the contract. He then spoke about how he loved the script and how it was dark. The retired wrestler elaborated that the role could have seen Hemsworth in Oscar contention. Check out the comments below:
“They kind of missed a beat in the contract, yeah [when Patrick Bet-David said Netflix screwed up]. There was a payment that wasn’t placed at the right time. The script was amazing. Scott Silver, who wrote the script for
Joker
,
Wolf of Wall Street
, a bunch of other movies, said, ‘This is the best thing I’ve ever written.’ When I read it, I’m like, oh my god, this is really good. At the time, I was in a space where I told him the positive stuff about wrestling.Spent about three years with this writer going back and forth. When I read it, it was just very, very dark, if that would be the right word. But it was probably what the public may want to see. When I read it I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, if this thing comes out…’ there was talk that Chris Hemsworth had never played a real person before and he could probably win an Oscar, this thing is so powerful.”
There Is Always Hope The Project May Materialize In The Future
Hogan’s comments seem pretty definitive, as it expands on the previous comments of director Todd Phillips, who was attached to helm the biopic. However, Hollywood is a place where things happen slowly. There is every chance that a new studio or streaming platform might greenlight a Hogan biopic, and the project could be salvaged that way. However, it’s unclear whether Hemsworth would still be involved, or if there would be different actors who could play Hogan.

Hulk Hogan has cropped up in a surprising number of movie roles from Gremlins 2 to Mr. Nanny, but what are his best parts and which were his worst?
The current deal might be dead, but that doesn’t mean Netflix can’t renegotiate, and another contract cannot be created to kick the project into life again. In this scenario, the chances of Phillips and Hemsworth being involved would likely be reduced, as both are successful artists in high demand and will probably be contracted to other projects in the coming years. However, if there can be a workaround, Netflix would no doubt like the pair to remain in contention.
Is Hulk Hogan Still A Star Worthy Of A Biopic?
Plagued By Personal Controversies, Hogan Remains A Captivating Presence
In recent times, Hogan has been as infamous for his off-camera controversies as his on-camera ones, and there is little doubt his brand has suffered because of it. However, I believe that his legacy and the success of recent wrestling movies like The Iron Claw means he is still a bankable name. Hogan remains an interesting and charismatic presence in the wrestling world, and his influence continues to be felt. As such, I believe there will likely be plenty of interest in a Hulk Hogan biopic in the future.
