If You Accidentally Got Into Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 8 Early On PS5, There’s A Way To Undo It

On January 27, 2025, some lucky players of Baldur’s Gate 3 on PlayStation 5 logged in to find that the game had updated to Patch 8, but it turns out they weren’t so lucky after all. A quick update from Larian Studios confirmed that this rollout of the new patch in some regions was not intentional and that players should roll their copy of BG3 back to the previous version as soon as possible to avoid any possible issues that may arise. The issue only affected PS5 players in Europe and Asia, and the update is no longer available.

The eighth major patch to Baldur’s Gate 3 was announced back in November 2024 with plans to be released early this year following a stress test. The patch will add several major features to the game, including a new subclass option for every class in the game, a photo mode, and cross-platform multiplayer. Despite these long-requested additions being made available early for some, PS5 players who have managed to update to Patch 8 will likely want to roll back to the previous version of Baldur’s Gate 3.

Why Some People Got Into BG3’s Patch 8 Too Early

Miscommunications As The Stress Test Went Live

The finalized version of Patch 8 for Baldur’s Gate 3 doesn’t have a set release date yet, but it will likely be soon as it’s set to enter its stress test this week. Following its announcement, Larian Studios opened registration for Baldur’s Gate 3 players who wanted to help test Patch 8’s new features. That stress test was set to go live this month, but it seems some kind of miscommunication led to the accidental launch of Patch 8 on PS5 as confirmed by Larian Studios in its blog post about the incident.

You might’ve noticed that some PS5 players logged on earlier today and found that Patch 8 was available to them. Our partners have confirmed that some regions mistakenly received the Patch 8 build as an update to their live game version, in preparation for the Patch 8 stress test.

Larian has confirmed that the stress test is going ahead this week as planned, and invitations will be sent out to selected players in waves. Those invitation e-mails will come with a key players can redeem to access the Patch 8 version of Baldur’s Gate 3 for testing purposes. While the new features of Patch 8 will be tantalizing to many Baldur’s Gate 3 fans, it seems most will have to wait just a little longer to get their hands on it.

How To Return To Patch 7 In Baldur’s Gate 3

Reinstalling The Game Will Fix It

Fortunately for those who may have accidentally updated to Patch 8, the fix is very straightforward — simply uninstall and reinstall Baldur’s Gate 3 to return to the Patch 7 version. For those unsure whether their game has been updated or not, checking the version number on the main menu is the quickest way to make sure; if the game is on version 01.800.000 or 4.1.1.6583053, that’s the Patch 8 version. Any other number means the installed game is the properly updated version.

PS5 players who received Patch 8 early don’t have to roll it back, but they should be aware that playing this untested version of Baldur’s Gate 3 will likely cause compatibility issues. Save files made in this version won’t be playable if the game is rolled back to an earlier version, and may not function with the proper release of Patch 8 later on either. They’ll also be unable to play multiplayer, installed mods will likely not function, and the game may suffer from general performance issues.
