Catwoman Has Many Looks But This Viral Cosplay Proves Batman Returns Did the Vixen Justice

From jewelry heists to saving the world, DC’s Catwoman has done it all. Selina Kyle has been a staple in the DC Universe for years, thanks to her close ties with Batman and her many solo adventures, and she’s got a wardrobe to match her long tenure. Michelle Pfeiffer’s iconic Batman Returns look remains one of her best, and this flawless cosplay proves it.

On Instagram, cosplay artist Lisa Mancini (@lisa.mancinerh) shared her brilliant recreation of Michelle Pfeiffer’s Catwoman from Tim Burton’s Batman Returns, a character that has mesmerized generations of fans since she first came slinking on screen in shiny, stitched black latex.

The cosplay shows off the full, intensive look, including the same sleek latex, prominent white stitching, heels, and cat-eared hood that Pfeiffer made famous; Mancini’s cosplay brings Selina Kyle to life in stunning detail, reminding fans that Batman Returns had one of Catwoman’s best looks to date.

In a franchise like Batman, where so much of the Gotham City “look” relies on darkness and shadow, it isn’t easy to stand out. Catwoman always manages to remain eye-catching, even in suits specifically designed to let her move unseen and leave silently with her prize. Selina often sports dark, skin-tight suits paired with some version of her classic cat ears, whether they’re shaped onto a mask or sitting atop a concealing hood. Most Catwoman designs tend to be a careful balance between functionality and aesthetics, and the Michelle Pfeiffer suit Lisa Mancini perfectly recreated fits perfectly into that wheelhouse.

In light of the effort required for the original design, Lisa Mancini’s cosplay is even more impressive.

The original suit, by costume designers Mary Vogt and Bob Ringwood, was made of tight black latex painted with a layer of silicon to give it the perfect fluid shine on set. The white stitching, arguably the most iconic aspect of that Catwoman look, was included at Tim Burton’s request, as he wanted to capture the look of a calico cat coming undone. The costume had to be so precisely fitted that the designers used a cast of Pfeiffer’s body to create it. In light of the effort required for the original design, Lisa Mancini’s cosplay is even more impressive.

Michelle Pfeiffer’s Cinematic Selina Kyle Sets The Standard

Selina Kyle often walks the line between villain and hero. While she frequently aids Batman and his allies in their endeavors around Gotham City, and continues to have a complicated personal relationship with Bruce Wayne, she never fully relinquishes her presence in the criminal underground. An exquisite jewel or expensive painting will always be a worthy target, even if it puts her (briefly) at odds with the Caped Crusader, and she always looks good on the job. Catwoman’s look for Burton’s Batman Returns captured Selina Kyle’s eye for detail, and Lisa Mancini’s magnificent cosplay proved that it’s a timeless look.
