I Know What You Did Last Summer may now be in production. The upcoming movie is set to be the fourth feature in the slasher franchise that kicked off in 1997, following teenagers stalked by a vengeful killer in a fisherman’s slicker. Directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, the I Know What You Did Last Summer legacy sequel is set to star Chase Sui Wonders, Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, Jonah Hauer-King, Billy Campbell, Nicholas Alexander Chavez, Gabbriette, Austin Nichols, and Lola Tung, in addition to original cast member Freddie Prinze Jr. reprising his role as Ray Bronson.
On her official Instagram account, original I Know What You Did Last Summer star Sarah Michelle Gellar shared an image that appears to be from the set of the upcoming legacy sequel. The image, which shows the back of a director’s chair with the I Know What You Did Last Summer logo appears to be from “video village,” where a monitor is set up to view filming as it progresses. She jokingly captioned the image “Scooby Doo 3 coming soon,” referring to another collaboration between her and Prinze Jr., also tagging him along with Robinson. See the original post below:

Sarah Michelle Gellar Is Likely Not In The Movie
Ultimately, this new image pointedly does not reveal too much about the upcoming teen horror movie. While Gellar is on set, it does not even indicate that she will be reprising her original role as Helen Shivers, who died in the original movie. In addition to being married to Freddie Prinze Jr. and close friends with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, she previously told PEOPLE that she has “an unofficial job title” as a continuity supervisor, as she has been working to make sure the script’s characterizations and story are consistent.
Freddie Prinze Jr. and Sarah Michelle Gellar met while on the set of the original 1997 movie and have been married since 2002.
However, this post does seem to reveal that the upcoming movie is officially in production, or at least in the latest stages of pre-production, which would indicate that it is on track for its planned July 2025 release date. Additionally, it may reveal that the working title for the project is I Know What You Did Last Summer, adopting the common legacy horror sequel titling trend of reusing the original movie’s title, which has been the case for movies including 2018’s Halloween, 2022’s Scream, 2021’s Candyman, and 2022’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
Our Take On Gellar’s I Know What You Did Last Summer Update
The Franchise May Be On Track
With the legacy sequel seemingly on track, it seems that hope is building that the franchise can continue to find its way in the modern era. This is the slasher series’ next shot at expanding in the 2020s after the cancelled I Know What You Did Last Summer TV show failed to last beyond a single season in 2021. Should the new movie become a hit, it could very well spawn a new series of sequels and establish the franchise anew, something that is a distinct possibility considering how smoothly its pre-production seems to have gone.
