WARNING! Potential spoilers ahead for Sabretooth: The Dead Don’t Talk #3

A new hero is debuting in the Marvel Universe, as Dragonfire will be making her debut in the upcoming Sabretooth miniseries. With ties to the mystical city of K’un Lun, the all-new hero looks like she’s able to channel her chi energy through her sword, much like Iron Fist does via his hands.

Although Sabretooth met his ultimate fate in the previous “Sabretooth War,” in the pages of Wolverine, the new miniseries looka to the past to tell an untold story from Victor Creed’s long history, in which Sabretooth mixes things up in the criminal underworld of early 1900s New York City.

The Immortal Iron Fist – written by Ed Brubaker and Matt Fraction, with art by David Aja – was the first series to explore the Iron Fists of the past, introducing previous bearers of the name such as Wu Ao-Shi, the Pirate Queen of Pinghai Bay, and Orson Randall, the Golden Age Iron Fist. Interestingly, the time period before Orson Randall took up the mantle remains relatively unexplored; the last person to carry the Iron Fist title was Kwai Jun-Fan, who was killed in 1878. As such, it’s entirely possible that Dragonfire could have wielded Iron Fist’s powers in the early 1900s.

According to
The Immortal Iron Fist
series, there were sixty-six previous bearers of the Iron Fist mantle before Danny Rand. So far, Marvel has only officially named ten of these previous Iron Fists.

Whatever her origins turn out to be, it’s exciting to see unexplored corners of Marvel history finally get their due in the comics. Long-lived characters like Wolverine and Sabretooth allow for creators to tell stories throughout the history of the Marvel Universe, and the legacy aspect of characters like Iron Fist means that multiple versions of these heroes have existed throughout history. Early 1900’s New York City should be a ripe setting for the action to take place, and the addition of warriors from K’un Lun getting involved sounds too cool to ignore.

The Dead Don’t Talk Is One Of Many Stories From Centuries Of Mayhem

Dragonfire’s debut in this series also carries a specific resonance for longtime fans; despite being best known as an X-Men antagonist, Sabretooth made his debut in Iron Fist #14. Even though he later became the arch-enemy of Wolverine, specifically, co-creator Chris Claremont originally intended for Victor Creed to be one of Iron Fist’s major antagonists. Whether or not Dragonfire is revealed to be the Iron Fist of the early 1900’s, fans will definitely have to check out the new Sabretooth miniseries to learn how everything shakes out.
