Naruto Heats up With a Big Love Triangle That Puts Boruto on the Spot

Boruto: Two Blue Vortex likes to follow its predecessor’s footsteps in depicting at least one prominent romantic rivalry reasonably sure to prompt debate among fans. In the case of Mikio Ikemoto and Masashi Kishimoto’s sequel series, Sumire Kakei and Sarada Uchiha show varying levels of romantic interest in Boruto Uzumaki, even if one may not be ready to admit it as strongly. But in the latest chapter of Boruto: Two Blue Vortex, Sumire confronts Sarada about what she perceives as a flippant public display of affection despite Sumire already having made her feelings known for Boruto.

The moment blindsided both Sarada and the readers, who likely only saw a grateful friend happy to see her former teammate alive, with her feelings being more or less immaterial. But this moment in the latest chapter asks whether the love triangle between Sumire, Sarada, and Boruto is a long-term plan for their dynamic and what’s prompting this sudden discussion. In Boruto: Two Blue Vortex, love may soon bloom on the battlefield, even if it might mean heartbreak for one party.

Sumire Makes Her Feelings for Boruto Clear to Sarada in Two Blue Vortex

But Why?

In Boruto: Two Blue Vortex chapter #16, Sumire confronts Sarada about the moment she hugged Boruto after reuniting with him in chapter #5, a moment of palpable disappointment for the Class Rep. Sumire broaches the subject when she takes an empathetic stance about Boruto’s secrecy, urging consideration for how he must be feeling, keeping those secrets, especially with their time-space ramifications. But then, Sumire brings attention to how Sarada similarly doesn’t consider her romantic feelings toward Boruto, openly saying she likes him a lot, driving a wedge between them in subsequent pages.

The cover quote for
Boruto: Two Blue Vortex,
“Love looks not with the mind but with the eyes,” timed with Sumire’s sudden confession, implies a cryptic hint due to Eida’s presence when it happens.

This sudden development is surprising: it suggests Sumire’s been dwelling on the thought until they had a moment to speak together, but it seems out of character, with even Sumire recognizing this. It’s most likely an organic development with Sumire acknowledging Sarada’s position as a romantic rival for Boruto’s affections. Beyond Eida’s Senrigan glimpse at Boruto hypothetically causing her charm to turn into Boruto’s charm affecting the girls, the explanation is most likely a simple love triangle explored for its conflicting potential.

Sumire’s Always Liked Boruto — Sarada, Not so Clear

Glimpses at the Original Series Indicate This Conversation Was Bound to Happen

While far better developed than Sakura and Ino’s rivalry over Sasuke in Naruto, Sarada’s feelings for Boruto have largely been well-concealed; the same cannot be said about Sumire. In Boruto: Naruto Next Generations chapter #19, Sumire stakes an early claim on his heart, stating that it bothers her that other girls might like Boruto. Given the events of Two Blue Vortex chapter #16, this is undoubtedly the case and is more coyly exposed when Kawaki asks Sumire if she likes Boruto in Naruto Next Generations chapter #56.

Boruto’s capture, interrogation, and escape reveal how complacent and weak Konoha security has become since Naruto disappeared at the end of Part I.

Sarada, meanwhile, has worked well cooperatively with Boruto and went to bat for him following the time skip due to knowing the truth about his situation, but she has never been as clear about her feelings. The closest the manga has come, aside from her heartfelt reunion in Two Blue Vortex chapter #5, is in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations chapter #76, when she gets flustered after Eida asks her if she likes him. However, much of this is crucial to the plot, which is left to be determined, but they must confront this rift in the future in Boruto: Two Blue Vortex.
