Taron Egerton Addresses Comparisons Between His Netflix Action Movie & Bruce Willis’ Die Hard

Taron Egerton has teased the connections between his upcoming Netflix movie and the seminal Bruce Willis classic Die Hard. Based on Roderick Thorp’s 1979 novel Nothing Lasts Forever, the producers of 1988’s Die Hard had originally approached a number of well-known action stars to assume the role of John McLane, including both Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Eventually, however, director John McTiernan settled on Bruce Willis, best known at the time for his role in the television comedy Moonlighting.

Despite receiving mixed critical reactions at the time of its release, Die Hard’s strong box office performance, combined with a far more favorable response from general audiences, firmly established Willis as one of Hollywood’s most bankable action stars. Eventually spawning four sequels, the original Die Hard would also eventually come to be regarded as one of the best action movies of all-time, and its Christmas Eve setting has left it indelibly connected with the holiday season.

Egerton Claims Netflix’s Newest Action Movie Has Much In Common With Willis’ Action Debut

Is The Kingsman Star Channeling His Inner John McLane?

With the movie’s release right around the corner, Egerton shares how Carry-On has some similarities to Die Hard . The Kingsman franchise vet leads the ensemble cast of Netflix’s new action movie as a young TSA agent who is being blackmailed into allowing a dangerous package onto a Christmas Eve flight. Hailing from Black Adam and Jungle Cruise director Jaume Collet-Serra, Carry-On‘s cast also includes Ozark’s Jason Bateman as the film’s mysterious antagonist.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter at the movie’s red carpet premiere ahead of its December 13 streaming release, Egerton reveled in Carry-On‘s connection with Christmas and expressed his hope that it will make audiences “feel very Christmassy in the same way as Die Hard. Check out his thoughts on the films’ connection below:

This film made me feel very Christmassy — that’s what I would love for it to do. Die Hard is a Christmas movie. This is a Christmas movie. I hope audiences love it.

1990’s Die Hard 2 May Be A More Apt Comparison

While Die Hard is certainly not the only action movie to be set during Christmas, it still proudly stands as the genre’s most famous and beloved example. Spawning endless debates about whether Die Hard is technically a Christmas movie, the film’s place in the pop culture landscape is now inseparable from its holiday setting, regardless of viewers’ opinions on the matter.

Die Hard is often considered one of the greatest Christmas action movies, but others live up to the Bruce Willis film.

Whether Carry-On will go on to receive the same kind of widespread association with the Christmas season as Die Hard remains to be seen, but perhaps its own airport setting would better link it with 1990’s Die Hard 2 instead. While in no way as well regarded as Willis’ original outing as John McClane, the first Die Hard sequel is also set on Christmas Eve and its own connections with the aviation industry would be a much better comparison point for Egerton’s latest action outing.
